The American Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka is committed to providing superior service to American citizens visiting or residing in Sri Lanka or the Maldives.  This website and the corresponding links on the left provides information on the services we provide.  For hours of operation and to contact the U.S. Embassy, please scroll down to the bottom of this webpage. 

The U.S. State Department's Office of American Citizen Services and Crises Management (ACS) administers the Consular Information Program, which includes information on Sri Lanka and the Maldives and contain additional subjects, such as entry requirements, safety concerns, and country characteristics.  These pages may also be accessed via the link on the right-hand side of the page. 

The Consular Section can:

  • issue a Consular Report of Birth Abroad,
  • issue U.S. Passports 
  • distribute Federal Benefit payments,
  • handle personal estates of deceased American Citizens,
  • assist with absentee voting registration,
  • provide notarial services 
  • provide United States income tax forms in April,
  • give information about the Sri Lanka-America Society (SLAS) and the North American Women's Association (NAWA).

Consular officers cannot:

  • act as travel agents,
  • act as a bank,
  • act as a lawyer,
  • act as an investigator,
  • or act as a law enforcement officer

Please do not expect the American Embassy to find you employment, get you residence or driving permits, act as interpreters, search for missing luggage, or settle disputes with hotel managers. The Embassy can, however, tell you how to get help on these and other matters.
